There are at risk teens in every society. For the most part, pointing fingers can make the situation worse. Placing the blame does not solve the issue.
Alcohol and drug addictions are usually hidden from family. It may take a few months or even years before the family even knows that there is a problem. By the time they do find out, the situation is normally already out of control. Alcohol and drugs are a severely destructive force to the family. The family tends to become ashamed of the situation which worsens the chance of recovery. It is only at this point that the family decides to seek help because they are not equipped to cope with it on their own.
Living for today and not thinking about tomorrow, teens do not think about the potential outcome of their decisions. They feel invincible. There are teens who, once they try drugs or alcohol, simply cannot say no to it. The others may try off and on but be able to walk away from it also.
Bipolar disorder, mental health problems, depression and bipolar disorder can lead to attempted suicide or suicide. If the teen suffers from untreated depression, this can cause suicide attempts or suicide.
As social structures and family units continue to decline, teens discover that they do not have the support that they need. A lack of nurturing from parents and trouble at school can enhance the problems. Turning to street gangs for their family is common.
Peer pressure often persuades a teen to become involved in the same rebellious conduct that they are involved in such as troublesome behavior, drugs and gangs. The absence of parental control can also add to the unacceptable activities.
Declining job opportunities and neighborhoods deteriorating add to the risk factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency. The underclass is growing, mainly in the inner cities. The continual cycle of poverty is also added to by unwed mothers, In which case, poverty seems to past on to the next generation.
Creating programs to provide intervention for children before they turn to rebellious behavior is necessary. Persuading the kids, who already display disruptive behavior, that there is a better life for them and there are adults who will support them in their efforts. These kids were not given the means to become creative members of society because of poverty and dysfunctional families.
